What I Think

I usually write about Windows only cause I use windows (I’ve used both Mac and Linux and like them both). PC users are usually sneered at by Mac users as virus don’t affect Mac. I’ve seen one Mac advertisement stating that there are 1 billion virus out loose but never on a Mac.

I don’t think this statement will hold true any longer, there’s a Mac trojan floating around inside a pirated iWork ’09 release that has appeared on various torrent sites.

When installing iWork 09, the iWorkServices package is installed. The installer for the Trojan horse is launched as soon as a user begins the installation of iWork, following the installer’s request of an administrator password (in older versions of Mac OS X, 10.5.1 or earlier, there will be no password request). This software is installed as a startup item (in /System/Library/StartupItems/iWorkServices, a location reserved normally for Apple startup items), where it has read-write-execute permissions for root. The malicious software connects to a remote server over the Internet; this means that a malicious user will be alerted that this Trojan horse is installed on different Macs, and will have the ability to connect to them and perform various actions remotely. The Trojan horse may also download additional components to an infected Mac.

According to Intego

Intego is issuing this alert to warn Mac users not to download iWork 09 installers from sites offering pirated software. (As of 6 am EST, at least 20,000 people have downloaded this installer.) The risk of infection is serious, and users may face extremely serious consequences if their Macs are accessible to malicious users.

I guess many PC users would be snickering.

I have a feeling that XP would be a operating system that just won’t die. Microsoft has stopped offering retail copies of the operating system and were intending to tell computer makers to stop preloading the software on new notebook and desktop systems earlier this year. But Microsoft had been delaying this decision for many times now. XP was going to be put to sleep on January 31, 2009. But now the company has allowed computer makers are allowed to continue shipping machines with Windows XP through 2009.

There was no “I’m a Mac” after Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” ad for a while and now it has returned. Apple yesterday came up with 2 new ads –

PC guy is seen allocating a huge pile of cash on advertising, with little left over for “fixing Vista.

I’m a Mac

The ad is mocking Microsoft’s $350 million ad campaign for Windows Vista, suggesting that some of that money would be better spent fixing Vista. I don’t know how they can mock Microsoft when they are spending more than $3.5 billion on SG&A (selling, general, and administrative expenses) for its fiscal year that ended September 30. How much of that was spent on advertising? I don’t know, but 10 percent doesn’t seem unreasonable. Apple’s advertising budget is also pretty massive. I mean, I see more Apple commercials on TV than ads for Barack Obama.

The second ad is making fun of Microsoft’s naming conventions which I didn’t find to be very funny.

Fennec is also available for Windows, Mac & Linux to give you a feel of the Firefox Mobile web browser – To run Fennec for Windows, all you have to do is download and unzip an 8MB file and click on Fennec.exe. Up pops a small web browser with nothing but a URL bar visible. Type in an address and away you go. You can scroll up and down on a web page by clicking and dragging the page. And you can zoom in on the content by double clicking.

You can get Fennec here.

Microsoft‘s longest living operating system Windows XP still has life left in it. Microsoft had instructed retailers to stop selling XP to consumers this summer. But customers purchasing new computers running Windows Vista can downgrade to Windows XP. That option was set to expire on January 31st, 2009. Microsoft has given OEMs  additional six months to sell PCs running Windows Vista with the ability to downgrade to Windows XP using an accompanying recovery disc. Now you can choose the option to downgrade till July 31st, 2009.

Now there seems to be a chance to skip Vista altogether and going directly to Windows 7.
