Firefox 3.1 Beta 2

Posted on: October 15, 2008

[This post was published at the time of release of nightly build, Firefox 3.1 beta 2 was released yesterday (December 9 2008) and I’ve reviewed it and put up post about it Firefox 3.1 beta 2 out now. So use that post to know about Firefox 3 beta 2, to learn about the nightly built of Firefox 3 beta 2, this post is appropriate ]

Firefox 3.1 beta 2 is now available in nightly builds and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux users.

The features are real improvement, the new JavaScript engine, called TraceMonkey, is still not turned on by default. You’ll have to activate it yourself by opening about:config and setting the javascript.options.jit.content boolean to true.

In acid 3 tests 3.1b2 is scoring 90 which is really good compared to 71 in Firefox 3.0.3, which is the current stable release. According to CNET in SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark test, Firefox 3.1 beta 1 completed the test in 2787.6 milliseconds–about twice as fast as the current stable release, Firefox 3.0.3, which clocked in at 5446.6 ms.

The visual tab switching is now available and it looks really good (how much memory is it eating?) It also includes the geolocator plug-in Geode that lets Web sites figure out a person’s approximate geographic location and use it in online services.

You can get Firefox 3.1 beta 1 from here.
