Templates in Google Docs

July 17, 2008

It’s really tough to make documents from scratch when you haven’t got time and are in hurry and Google comes to the rescue with 309 templates. You can use the templates from the new Google Docs directory as a starting point for your timesheets, resumes, invoices, photo albums or party invitations.

What is a template

A template gives you a quick start towards creating a document, spreadsheet, or presentation. Each template has boilerplate content and preset design styles that are meant to be reused. To get started, click use this template, which will create a new document that is a copy of the template. You can then edit the document, replacing boilerplate text and images with your own.

Sadly the option to create a new template is not available, you can save them as regular documents and use File > Save as new copy (Copy spreadsheet) to create duplicates. If you publish a spreadsheet, append &newcopy to the URL to obtain a template link.

New contact manager in gmail

July 13, 2008

Gmail has a bad habit of considering the person you’ve mailed a few times as a contact. For instance I usually mail to the persons who have commented in this blog. After 2-3 such mails they are added to my contact list and appear in the chat window as well and  even if those 3 mail were all I sent. Then I have to go to the contact manager and manually delete the contact.

An updated version of Gmail’s contact manager has a separate section for the people you’ve emailed: “suggested contacts”. The persons you mail are added to “suggested contacts” and from there you get the option to move the person to your contacts list “My Contacts”.

This feature is currently being rolled out and will soon be seen in everyone’s contact manager.

Google adds ‘Privacy’ to home page

July 5, 2008

This this one word Google has cools the controversy going on in California, the California Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003, which requires the operator of a commercial Web site that collects personal information to link to its privacy policy from its home page.

Google earlier said that the users can get to know about the privacy via “About Google” or by searching for “Google privacy policy”. After the issue buzzed about the blogosphere, four privacy groups wrote Google urging to add the link.

At last Google added the link. In official Google Blog Marissa Mayer, the Google vice president, said that Google’s two founders told her the word privacy could only be added to the home page if another word was deleted, leaving the page at 28 words. So the copyright notice at the bottom of the page was changed from “© 2008 Google” to “© 2008 - Privacy.”
